Spiritual Gifts

Explore the gifts of the Spirit as you seek to identify and utilise yours.

What are Spiritual Gifts?

A spiritual gift is not something we are born with but are gifts given by God through the Holy Spirit when we decide to follow Jesus. These gifts are given to accomplish his will in our lives and allow us to minister to one another in the body of Christ. The spiritual gifts are listed in three main biblical passages:

Romans 12:3-8
1 Corinthians 12:1-11
Ephesians 4:1-16

*Other sources may list gifts we have not included and we may have included gifts which other lists would omit. This often depends on which passages and translations people draw from.

Spiritual Gifts differ from Natural skills.

A talent or skill is a natural ability that is something we are born with but which usually needs to be developed into a talent or skill. Some natural and spiritual gifts may appear the same outwardly (for example, the gift of teaching), but a believer may have the natural gift of teaching without having the spiritual gift.

Spiritual gifts may also be expressed through natural gifts.
e.g. If one has the natural gift of musicality and the spiritual gift of teaching, he or she may use the gift of teaching through the writing and singing of songs that teach biblical truth. Many of the Reformation hymns are of this nature.

So sometimes I feel like I am actually able to hear Him more clearly because I’m not so busy formulating my own words. And sometimes, particularly when praying for another person, I start in tongues, which actually allows me to listen to God and be in his presence before he then guides me with what to say in English."
