"Syndal has been a foundational and pivotal part of my faith journey for over forty years. I had the privilege of growing up here with my parents (my father has been a Syndal pastor since I was born), grandparents and extended family. I was dedicated and baptised at Syndal and it was here I met my wife, Charis, and where we were married in 2002. Our children were dedicated at Syndal and are active participants in the youth, children’s and creative arts ministries.
During my time at Syndal I’ve been grateful for the opportunity to serve and lead in Boys’ Brigade, creative arts and life groups, as well as on summer missions. In my twenties I spent some time living in Adelaide and London, joining Pentecostal and Anglican churches and serving on the hospitality/host teams. I have experienced encouragement, instruction, admonishment, comfort and grace from the people of Syndal and I love being part of a community of believers of all shapes, sizes, ages, cultural backgrounds and political persuasions.
I have spent two decades in the public sector in Australia and overseas and am currently employed by the Victorian government in a management role in family violence and child wellbeing services.
I have been on council for two years and recently concluded an eight-year team on the board and executive committee of Youth Dimension, a Christian organisation committed to bringing hope to young people.
I’m still challenged by the Unlimited series in the English services over May and June, where we looked at overcoming obstacles holding us back from Jesus’ call to mission. Chris Danes encouraged us that when it comes to mission, there is a potency in doing it together. In a city, nation and world in need of Jesus, Syndal has enormous opportunity and exciting potential.
I’m accepting a nomination to Church Council Chair acutely conscious of my need for Jesus and committed to helping Syndal living out our mission to Present Jesus, Provide Nurture and Produce Disciples."
Judy and I are returning members at SBC, first back in the early 2000’s when we were active members, and more recently when circumstances led us back. We have two adult children and four grandchildren.
In my late teens I made two big decisions, the first being to invite Jesus into my life, and the second to respond to the call to full time ministry, which led me to enrolling to attend bible college, followed by Whitley College studies and ordination.
The door opened for me to start what was to be a long period of ministry amongst Baptist churches, which opened opportunities in church planting and team ministries.
In the years before retirement I worked with BapCare as Director of Pastoral care and for a period as a Regional Pastor with the BUV.
I have always believed that the church is the main vehicle that God uses to reach out to ‘as yet non-christians’ and to give love, comfort and support to all. Syndal Baptist is a wonderful, intergenerational and multi-cultural church which seeks to meet the needs of all age groups and the wider community, and I believe my life’s experience and understanding of Christian ministry fits well with the Syndal church. For this reason I would be pleased to take a position on the church council if the church membership feels this would be a right appointment.
I was raised in a Christian family and have always had a church community around me to support and anchor foundational faith for me. I started attending Syndal Baptist Church in 2009 with my family and now my husband and children attend Syndal and remain closely woven in the Syndal fabric through our life group and Tribe.
During my time at Syndal I have had the opportunity to be involved in a mission trip to Kenya and attend leadership conferences in the US, which I continue to draw on those experiences and have deepened my faith in so many ways. I still recall the tangible joy of praise for Jesus the children we encountered, displayed so freely. I have also been apart of BSF for many years, as another avenue for a deeper study of the bible. I have served on the worship team, Tribe and more recently, the hosting team.
Most importantly, I am a mum of two very bubbly girls and my husband and I are very much in the middle of this transformative season of life. I am wholly appreciative of being able to experience Jesus through the lens of young minds and revel in their curiosity and wonderment.
The church represents so many different things for people who are apart of the community and even for those who are peripheral to that and how Jesus continues to work in every layer of that is a very important conversation I want to be apart of. With my life experience, touch points of different ministries and deep sense to contribute in brining Jesus’s love to all aspects of the broader community for generations to come, I am honourably accepting a nomination of Church Council Member.
